I took the daylight hours for myself today and went first downtown to trim my shaggy head (still shaggy, now manageably so), walked down to English Bay, then headed over to Canada Place to grab a shuttle out to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park.
What a gorgeous, gorgeous place. It is definitely on the touristy side, but still - it was amazing to be able to stand in the midst of towering, 40m tall Douglas-firs and western red cedars, swaying over beds of ferns and fallen big leaf maple leaves (that's their common name, and fittingly so; the leaves I found were bigger than my head!). I also got to see a Douglas squirrel (so tiny! so quick!) and the tail ends of a bald eagle and another large raptor with dark feathers as they soared away into the trees. And lots of little mushrooms, and moss that started growing on trees. It was incredible. The bridge is also probably some sort of engineering marvel but I was too busy looking at the forest, like the nerd I am. It was interesting to walk on though. Swayed a lot and tourists kept making noises of dismay when it wiggled.
Oh and I also got to see my first glimpse of SUNLIGHT in Vancouver! The clouds finally parted just as the sun was beginning to lower, and it shot a perfect ray of sunlight through the Capilano canyon, hitting the bridge and the trees on either side and casting shadows into the mist upstream... it was really breathtaking. Totally worth it, even though I had to get back to the lab and finish my 6 hours of work for the day and didn't get home till 15 minutes ago. Now I'm going to go to bed exhausted, but very happy.
